2013-2014 NHL Season Off to an Exciting Start

The 2013-2014 NHL season promises to be as action packed as previous ones. It remains to be seen if the league realignment that moved the always competitive Detroit Red Wings and up and coming Columbus Blue Jackets from the Western Conference to the Eastern Conference will shift the balance of power. Here are some other top stories of the NHL season underway.

After losing their season opener to the Colorado Avalanche, the Anaheim Ducks have gone 5-0.  The Ducks have never before won five or their first six games. Their last win on October 16 was a big test. Goalie Vikto Fasth had to make 33 saves to keep the streak alive. The Ducks will go for 6 in a row at home at the Honda Center on Friday, October 18. The NHL season underway and things are looking promising for the Ducks.

Rangers’ captain out with broken thumb

New York Rangers team captain Ryan Callahan is out for possibly a month due to a broken thumb suffered on October 16 during a victory against the Washington Capitals. Callahan’s stellar goal handling capabilities and strong defensive skills will be sorely missed in his absence.

Maixm Lapierre suspended for 5 games

The National Hockey League’s Department of Player Safety announced that Maxim Lapierre, a forward for the St. Louis Blues, is suspended for 5 games for boarding Dan Boye of the San Jose Sharks. The incident happened during the Blues – Sharks game on October 15.

NHL players make a fashion statement

VanityFair.com announced its NHL “10 Best Dressed” list. Perennial fashion horse Henrik Lundqvist of the New York Rangers was one of the players who made the cut. Other winners include Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins, Brooks Laich of the Washington Capitals, Shea Weber of the Nashville Predators, Jason Spezza of the Ottawa Senators and Gabriel Landeskog of the Colorado Avalanche.

The NHL season underway and things are already heating up. All indications are it will be another action-packed season.
